Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does river water turn white and wild over rocks?

The Big Idea

River water turns white over rocks because of millions of tiny air bubbles! Where a river drops steeply or runs over a bumpy bed, the water speeds up and tumbles. That makes rapids.

A Bumpy Bed

Step one: a bumpy riverbed. Where the river drops steeply, or runs over lots of rocks, the water speeds up. It tumbles and splashes, and the whole river gets noisy.

Air Mixes In

Step two: air mixes in. The churning water traps air and whips it into bubbles. There are millions of them, all swirling together.

White Water

Step three: the water looks white. Each tiny bubble bounces light in every direction. All that scattered light makes the water look white, like foam.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at rapids! Rocks make the water tumble. Air gets trapped in the tumbling water. The air turns into millions of bubbles. And bubbles make the water look white. Rapids are noisy, fast, and full of power, so we enjoy them from far away.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! White water looks white because of millions of tiny air bubbles. Rapids are noisy, fast, and powerful. Rapids are dangerous, so only watch them from a safe viewing spot. Stay well back from the edge, with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pour water into a clear bowl from high up and watch the bubbles. Then pour gently, close to the bowl. Why is one frothy? Do this over a sink or tray to catch splashes. You just made your own rapids!
