Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a river sometimes leave an old loop behind as a crescent-shaped lake?
The Big Idea
A winding river can leave an old loop behind as a crescent-shaped lake! It is called an oxbow lake. It forms when a river cuts straight across a bend.
Bends Get Tighter
Step one: bends get tighter. A winding river bends back and forth. The outside of each bend wears away, so the loop gets tighter and tighter.
A Shortcut
Step two: a shortcut. In a flood, the river can cut straight across the narrow neck of the loop. Now the water flows the short way.
Oxbow Lake
Step three: an oxbow lake. The old loop is cut off, forming a curved lake. Oxbow lakes are great places for birds and fish.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at an oxbow lake! First, the river winds in big loops. Then a flood breaks through the neck. The river takes a shortcut and cuts off the loop. What is left is a curved oxbow lake. Oxbows often become calm homes for wildlife.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Oxbow lakes are named after the U-shaped piece of an ox yoke. A yoke is a wooden bar that connects oxen to a plow. Old oxbows can slowly fill in and turn into wetlands. Stay back from the edge, and stay with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Bend a piece of string into a loop shape on a sheet of paper. Then draw a straight line across the neck of the loop. Which part becomes the oxbow? Color it blue like a lake! You just made an oxbow lake on paper!
