Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What happens where a river meets the sea?
The Big Idea
The place where a river meets the sea is called an estuary! Fresh river water mixes with salty seawater. The mixed water is called brackish, which means a little bit salty.
Fresh Meets Salt
Step one: fresh meets salty. River water has very little salt, and seawater has a lot. Where they mix, the water is brackish.
Tides Change It
Step two: the tides change things. When the tide comes in, salty water pushes up the estuary. When it goes out, fresh water flows toward the sea, so the mix is always changing.
Nursery for Life
Step three: a nursery. Many young fish find food and shelter in estuaries. Birds visit to feed in the shallow water.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at an estuary! Fresh water comes down the river. Salty water comes in from the sea. The tides push and pull the mix. And young fish and birds love the shelter. The St. Lawrence Estuary in Canada is one of the biggest in the world.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Estuaries are some of the most productive habitats on Earth. Brackish water is a bit salty, but not as salty as the sea. The mix changes with the tides. Watch estuaries from the shore with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Stir plenty of salt and a drop of blue food coloring into a small glass of water. Gently pour plain water over the back of a spoon on top. Watch the two layers. Do not taste either one! Salty water is heavier, so it stays on the bottom. You just made an estuary in a glass!
