Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Where does all the mud go at the end of a river?

The Big Idea

At a river's mouth, the current slows down and the mud and sand settle to the bottom! Over thousands of years, those layers pile up into new land called a delta. A delta is often shaped like a fan.

River Slows

Step one: the river slows. When a river reaches a lake or the sea, the water spreads out. Slow water cannot carry as much, so the mud and sand start to settle.

Layers Build

Step two: layers build up. Each flood and each season adds another thin layer. Over thousands of years, the layers make a fan-shaped area of new land.

A Rich Home

Step three: a rich home. Deltas are fertile and full of channels and wildlife. Birds, fish, and plants thrive in the soft, wet soil.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a delta! A river brings its load of mud and sand. The mud settles where the river slows. Over time it builds up new land with many small channels. And birds, fish, and plants make it their home. Two big examples are the Mississippi River Delta and the Mackenzie River Delta.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A delta can be shaped like the Greek letter delta, a triangle. Deltas are fertile, with rich soil for plants and animals. The Mississippi and Mackenzie rivers both build deltas. Stay with a grown-up near any river.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Slowly pour muddy water from a cup onto a tray that tilts into a bowl. Watch the mud spread out and settle. Look for tiny channels forming. Pour the muddy water outdoors when you are done. You just made a mini delta!
