Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a research ship that spends a year frozen in the ice?

The Big Idea

It is a research ship that froze into the Arctic ice on purpose and drifted for about a year! The German ship Polarstern did this in 2019, so scientists could study the Arctic through every season.

Freeze In

Step one: freeze in. In 2019, the ship Polarstern parked beside a big ice floe and let the sea freeze around it. Then it drifted with the moving ice, like a passenger on a giant raft.

Live and Work

Step two: live and work. Hundreds of scientists took turns living on board and working on the ice, studying air, ice, ocean, and life. It was a floating science lab, with ships and planes bringing new teams.

Drift Far

Step three: drift far. Wind and currents slowly pushed the ice, and the ship, across the Arctic. Canada's research icebreaker Amundsen also works in the Arctic, studying the ocean and ice.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The ship is the base, with labs and bunks. The ice floe around it becomes a science yard. Teams measure snow, ice, air, and sea. And in winter, it is dark for months, so careful safety rules matter.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The ship drifted about 1,500 miles with the ice. That trip took roughly a year. Some teams watched for polar bears, to keep everyone safe. Data from the trip helps improve weather and climate models.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Imagine you are on a ship frozen in the ice. Write a short diary entry about one day on the ice. What would you see, hear, and study? Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

A ship frozen in the ice became a floating lab for science. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
