Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do weather balloons help polar scientists?

The Big Idea

Weather balloons carry instruments high into the sky for polar scientists! Station staff release them every day. The instruments measure the air as the balloon climbs.

Launch It

Step one: launch it. Every day, station staff fill a big balloon and release it. It carries a small instrument package called a radiosonde.

Measure the Air

Step two: measure the air. As the balloon rises about 20 miles high, it measures temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind. It sends the numbers back to the station by radio, so forecasters get fresh data every day.

Check the Ozone

Step three: check the ozone. Some balloons track the ozone layer, which protects Earth from harmful sunlight. In the end, the balloon pops and the instruments drift back down.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The balloon stretches wider as it rises and the air thins out. The radiosonde is a small box of instruments. It measures temperature, wind, and more. And it rises miles above the clouds.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The ozone layer above Antarctica is checked every spring. Balloons help forecasters predict the weather, even far from the poles. The data goes to weather offices around the world. Never chase or touch a fallen instrument box without asking a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, tie a light balloon to a string and watch it float up. Hold on tight and never let go outdoors. Recycle it when done. Imagine it climbing for miles! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Weather balloons let scientists measure the sky high above the ice. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
