Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is Antarctica so windy?

The Big Idea

Antarctica is so windy because cold, heavy air slides downhill off the high ice sheet like water flowing down a slope! Scientists call these katabatic winds. Hold on to your hat.

Cold, Heavy Air

Step one: cold, heavy air. On the high ice sheet, the air gets very cold. Cold air is heavier than warm air, so it sinks. That sinking air is the start of the wind.

Downhill Rush

Step two: the downhill rush. The heavy air slides downhill toward the coast like water flowing down a slope. These strong, steady winds are called katabatic winds.

Hurricane Speed

Step three: hurricane speed. Near the coast, the winds can blow as fast as a hurricane. Some of Antarctica's windiest places are among the windiest on Earth. Strong winds make building and working there a challenge.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The ice sheet is high and domed. Air on top cools off and gets heavy. It pours downhill in a steady blast. The wind is strongest near the coast. People there lean into the wind to walk. Wind and cold together make it feel even colder.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some windy coastal spots average about 40 miles per hour across the whole year. Gusts can reach hurricane speeds. Katabatic winds blow nearly all the time. Researchers wear special clothes and stay in sturdy buildings. Never go out in strong winds without grown-ups.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, be an explorer! Tilt a tray and pour some cool water slowly down it, with a grown-up. Notice how the water picks up speed. Cold, heavy air flows like water down a slope. Dry the tray afterward.

Outro

Cold, heavy air rushing downhill makes Antarctica windy. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
