Where Is the Coldest Place on Earth?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Where is the coldest place on Earth?

The Big Idea

The coldest place on Earth is Antarctica! Vostok Station there recorded minus 128.6 degrees Fahrenheit in 1983. That is colder than any other weather station on the planet. Brrr, let's look.

Record Cold

Step one: record cold. At Vostok Station in Antarctica, the temperature hit minus 128.6 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 89.2 Celsius, in 1983. That is the coldest air temperature ever measured at a weather station.

Even Colder Spots

Step two: even colder spots. Satellites have found places on the high Antarctic plateau that are even colder, near minus 135 degrees Fahrenheit. That is about minus 93 Celsius.

Why So Cold?

Step three: why so cold? The air there is dry, high, and dark for months. With no Sun and little cloud, heat escapes to space.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The ice plateau sits high above sea level. The air is very dry and still. In winter, the Sun does not rise for months. So heat leaks away into space. Cold on top of cold!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! At that temperature, your breath would freeze into tiny crystals in the air. Antarctica's coldest air is colder than a home freezer by over 120 degrees. Scientists work there in special warm clothing. Never go out in extreme cold without grown-ups and proper gear. Always dress warmly when it is cold outside.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, be a detective! A home freezer is around 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Compare it to minus 128. How many degrees colder is the coldest place on Earth? That's 128 degrees colder!
