Why Are There More Kinds of Beetles than Anything Else?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are there more kinds of beetles than anything else?

The Big Idea

There are more kinds of beetles than any other animal group! About one out of every four known animal species is a beetle. They live almost everywhere on land, from rainforests to deserts, and the rainforest holds a great many of them.

Tough Armor

Step one: tough armor. Beetles have hard wing covers that protect their folded wings and soft bodies. That armor lets them squeeze into tight places, like under bark, without getting hurt.

Eat Anything

Step two: eat almost anything. Some beetles eat leaves, some eat wood, some eat fungi, and some hunt other insects. Each new menu leaves room for a new kind of beetle.

Time to Change

Step three: lots of time. In warm, wet places like rainforests, beetles had millions of years to change and split into thousands of special types. Scientists keep finding new beetle species every year.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at beetle jobs! Leaf eaters nibble green leaves. Wood chewers help break down logs. Fungus eaters feast on mushrooms. And hunters catch other insects.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! About 1 in 4 known animal species is a beetle. Hard wing covers protect their delicate wings. New beetle species are found every year. Watch beetles from a distance, and never pick them up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw three beetles that look different. One eats leaves, one digs in dung, and one chews wood. What body parts are different? Show your drawings to someone you love!
