Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some rainforest spiders live together in giant webs?

The Big Idea

Most spiders live alone, but a few kinds in the Amazon live in big family groups! Hundreds or thousands share one giant web. Working together helps them survive in the rainforest. Scientists call this rare way of living social behavior.

Build Together

Step one: build together. Each spider spins a little silk, and all the threads add up to a gigantic web. Some of these webs are big enough to fill a small room, stretching from branch to branch.

Catch Big Prey

Step two: catch big prey. One spider could not handle a large insect, but a crowd can. Together they hold it still and share the meal, so even a big insect becomes dinner for the whole group.

Raise Young

Step three: raise the young. The spiders share food and look after the babies together. Living in a group helps them in the busy, dangerous rainforest.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the big web! Hundreds of spiders live here side by side. Their silk makes one huge web. Together they can catch prey much larger than one spider. And they raise the babies as a group.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Only a few spider kinds live in groups. Their webs can fill the space of a small room. The group shares food and cares for young. Look at wild spiders from far away, and never touch them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, tape string across a doorway frame. Make a crisscross web. Toss soft pom-poms onto it. Does a bigger web catch more?
