How Do Dung Beetles Help the Forest Floor?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do dung beetles help the forest floor?

The Big Idea

Dung beetles are the clean-up crew of the forest floor! They roll or bury animal droppings, which puts nutrients back into the soil. That helps new plants grow.

Roll and Bury

Step one: roll and bury. Dung beetles roll animal droppings into balls or bury them underground. They work day and night, and many are busiest at dawn and dusk.

Feed the Soil

Step two: feed the soil. Buried droppings break down and put nutrients back into the soil. Plant roots can then use those nutrients to grow strong and green, so the whole forest benefits.

Plant Seeds

Step three: seeds and flies. Many animals drop seeds in their droppings, and the beetles bury them where they can sprout. Cleaning up also means fewer flies on the forest floor.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the beetle crew! The beetle is small but strong. It rolls the ball in a line, away from other beetles. Some beetles use the Milky Way to steer straight. And the buried nutrients help new plants grow.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some dung beetles use the stars and the Milky Way to roll in a straight line. Beetles are busy cleaners at dawn and dusk. Burying seeds helps new trees get started. Watch beetles from a distance, and wash your hands if you go outside.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Roll a small ball of play dough across the floor. Try to keep it in a perfectly straight line. It is hard to do! Beetles use light clues to steer.
