Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a bucket orchid make bees take a bath?

The Big Idea

A bucket orchid has a flower shaped like a bucket, filled with liquid! Male orchid bees come to collect its perfume, and some slip in for a splash. Then the orchid sends them out the only way, carrying its pollen.

Perfume Hunt

Step one: the perfume hunt. Male orchid bees scrape up the flower's perfume with special brushes on their legs. Scientists think the scent helps them impress other bees.

The Slip

Step two: the slip. Sometimes the slippery lip makes a bee tumble into the liquid in the bucket. The bee is not hurt. It just has to find a way out.

The Tunnel

Step three: the narrow tunnel. The only way out is a tight tunnel, and as the bee squeezes through, a pad of sticky pollen attaches to its back. The bee carries the pollen to the next orchid.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the flower! The orchid has a bucket-shaped lip. The bucket holds a little liquid. Male orchid bees visit for perfume. The narrow exit is how pollen gets glued on.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Orchid bees can dry their wings and fly away again. The pollen pad is stuck to the bee like a tiny backpack. Each orchid kind is built for its own kind of bee. Enjoy orchids with your eyes, and never touch wild flowers.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, cut a small paper cup in half. Use it to make a pretend bucket flower. Plan how a toy bee gets in and out. What would force it through just one exit?
