What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some tropical fruit trees grow flowers and fruit right on their trunks?

The Big Idea

Some tropical trees grow flowers and fruit right on their trunks! Cacao and jackfruit trees are famous for it. Scientists call this strange habit cauliflory.

Flowers on the Trunk

Step one: flowers on the trunk. Cacao and jackfruit trees have flowers and fruit sprouting directly from the trunk or big branches. The trunk becomes the flower garden.

Heavy Fruit

Step two: heavy fruit. Scientists think this may help big, heavy fruit hang on without snapping thin twigs. A thick trunk or branch can hold much more weight.

Easy to Find

Step three: easy to find. It may also make it easier for pollinators and fruit eaters that live low in the forest to find them. The fruit sits where visitors can see it, close to the ground in the shady layers.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The trunk is thick and strong. Flowers pop out right on it. Heavy fruit hangs from it. Visitors can find it easily. A fruity design that suits a heavy harvest.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A jackfruit can weigh as much as a small child. It is one of the largest tree fruits in the world, and it can grow as long as a baseball bat. Cacao pods also grow straight from the trunk. Enjoy fruit trees with your eyes, and only eat fruit from a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a tree with fruit hanging from the branch tips. Draw another tree with fruit on the trunk. Which design is stronger for heavy fruit? Explain why you think so.
