Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a cacao pod turn into chocolate?
The Big Idea
Chocolate starts as seeds inside a pod that grows on a cacao tree! The tree grows in the shade of the rainforest. It takes many steps to turn those seeds into a chocolate bar.
The Pod
Step one: the pod. Cacao pods are shaped like footballs. Inside are seeds, called beans, wrapped in sweet white pulp. A pod can hold dozens of beans.
Ferment and Dry
Step two: ferment and dry. People scoop out the beans and let them ferment, which develops flavor. Then the beans are dried in the sun, which turns them brown and stops the fermenting.
Roast and Grind
Step three: roast and grind. Next, the beans are roasted, cracked, and ground into a paste. Mixed with sugar and other ingredients, the paste becomes chocolate.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! It starts as a pod. The beans are scooped from the pulp. They are roasted and ground. Then they become chocolate. Yum, from a rainforest tree. All that work for one sweet treat!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Cacao originally grew wild in the Amazon basin. Today it is also grown on farms in warm places around the world. Farms that keep shade trees help protect birds and other wildlife, so they can be a gentle way to grow chocolate. Never taste wild pods or seeds. Only eat food from a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look at the label on a chocolate bar. How much of it is cacao? Compare the numbers on a few different bars. Which one has the most?
