What Is the Titan Arum, and Why Does It Smell Terrible?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is the titan arum, and why does it smell terrible?

The Big Idea

The titan arum is a giant rainforest plant that smells terrible on purpose! It makes one of the largest flower clusters in the world. The stink attracts the insects that help it make seeds.

Giant Bloom

Step one: a giant bloom. The titan arum grows in the rainforests of Sumatra. Its flower cluster can grow taller than a grown-up.

A Smelly Trick

Step two: a smelly trick. When it opens, it smells like rotting meat. That smell attracts flies and beetles, which usually look for rotting food. They are tricked into visiting the flower.

Spread Pollen

Step three: spread the pollen. The insects crawl over the flower and pick up pollen. They carry it to other flowers, so the plant can make seeds.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The flower cluster is giant. The smell is awful, on purpose. Flies and beetles love it. But it blooms only a day or two. It is a rare, smelly show. The flower even warms itself to spread the smell farther.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The titan arum has been nicknamed the corpse flower. It blooms rarely, and then only for a day or two. Its stinky bloom can reach about 10 feet, or 3 meters, tall. Admire wild plants with your eyes, and never pick them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Measure 10 feet on the floor with a tape measure. Stand beside the line. Imagine a flower that tall. What would it look like in your room?
