Why Do Some Plants on the Forest Floor Have Leaves as Big as Umbrellas?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some plants on the forest floor have leaves as big as umbrellas?

The Big Idea

Some plants on the forest floor have leaves as big as umbrellas because the floor is dim! Only a little sunlight filters down through the canopy. A big leaf can catch more of that light.

Dim Floor

Step one: a dim floor. Tall trees block most of the sunlight. Only a little light filters down to the plants on the ground.

Spread Wide

Step two: spread wide. Plants like elephant ear, heliconia, and giant ferns spread wide, flat leaves. Each big leaf gathers every bit of sunshine it can.

Thin and Light

Step three: thin and light. These thin leaves are very good at using low light. Some are so large that animals use them as shelters in the rain.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The forest floor is dim. Wide leaves spread out flat. They gather as much light as they can. Some even work as umbrellas for animals. A big leaf is a big helper for a plant in the shade.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Elephant ear leaves can be taller than a child. Alocasia is the science name for elephant ear plants. A leaf is like a solar panel for the plant. Admire wild plants with your eyes, and never pick or taste them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, hold a small paper circle and a large paper circle under a dim lamp. Which one catches more of the light? Bigger leaves catch more. Never touch a hot lamp bulb.
