Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a strangler fig grow around another tree?

The Big Idea

A strangler fig starts life high in a tree and slowly wraps around it! Its roots grow down the trunk to the soil. Over many years, they form a lattice around the host tree.

A Seed Drops

Step one: a seed drops. A bird or monkey drops a fig seed on a tree branch. The seed sprouts high up in the sunlight, where it has a head start.

Roots Reach Down

Step two: roots reach down. The seedling sends roots creeping down the trunk to the soil, while its leaves reach for the sunlight. Once the roots touch the ground, the fig grows much faster.

A Lattice Forms

Step three: a lattice forms. Over many years, the roots thicken and fuse into a lattice around the host. Eventually the host tree may die and rot away, leaving a hollow fig in its shape.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! It begins as a seed on a branch. Roots grow down to the soil. They fuse into a lattice. Later, the center may be hollow. A fig tree takes its time, and the whole story can last for decades.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The hollow space inside an old strangler fig is a home for many animals. Bats, birds, and insects can shelter inside. Fig fruit also feeds many other animals. Never climb into or onto wild trees.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Wrap a few strands of yarn around a tall cardboard tube. Add more strands that cross over them. Slide the tube out. You built a hollow fig lattice!
