Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do bromeliads hold tiny ponds in the treetops?
The Big Idea
A bromeliad is a plant with leaves that form a cup, and the cup holds a tiny pond! Rainwater collects in the center, high up in the treetops. Whole communities of animals live in these hanging pools.
Leaf Cup
Step one: a leaf cup. A bromeliad grows tight, overlapping leaves in a rosette shape. The leaves make a cup in the middle that catches rainwater.
Tiny Pond
Step two: a tiny pond. Some bromeliads hold a few cups of water. That becomes a miniature pond high above the ground, with no lake or stream in sight.
Pond Life
Step three: pond life. Tree frogs lay eggs in the water, and insects, worms, and spiders live there too. The plant takes in nutrients from the animals' wastes and the leaves that fall in.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Tight leaves form a rosette. The center holds rainwater. Frogs lay eggs in the pool. Many tiny animals move in. It is a pond, a nursery, and a garden, all in one plant.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some bromeliad pools hold their own tiny food webs. The animals feed the plant, and the plant gives them a home. A big bromeliad can be a pond for years. Look, but do not touch the plants or the animals in them.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, shape a coffee filter into a rosette. Pour a few drops of water in the middle. Does it catch and hold the water? Then draw who might live there.

Bromeliads turn rain into tiny ponds full of life. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
