Why Do Orangutans Build a New Bed in the Trees Each Night?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do orangutans build a new bed in the trees each night?

The Big Idea

Orangutans build a fresh bed in the trees every night! They live in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. A new bed each evening keeps out bugs and keeps them safe high above the ground.

Weave a Frame

Step one: weave a frame. At dusk, an orangutan bends and weaves branches into a sturdy platform. It builds right in the fork of a tree, far above the ground, where it can rest safely.

Add Comfort

Step two: add comfort. It adds leafy twigs for a soft mattress. Sometimes it even makes a leafy roof to keep off the rain.

Fresh Every Night

Step three: fresh every night. The whole job takes only about 5 or 10 minutes. A clean new bed keeps out bugs, and it is far above the ground, so it is safe from many dangers.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, branches are bent and woven together. Then leafy twigs make a soft mattress. A leafy roof can keep off the rain. And it all sits high up in a tree. Home sweet nest! A new one is built almost every evening.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Orangutan mothers teach their young how to build nests. Babies practice by watching and copying. The word orangutan means person of the forest. Always watch wild orangutans from far away and never touch them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Outside with a grown-up, build a nest for a toy using sticks, grass, and leaves. Give it a gentle shake. Is it stable? Why did you weave the sticks?
