Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a snake climb a smooth tree trunk?

The Big Idea

Tree snakes climb smooth trunks using light bodies, grippy belly scales, and clever curves! Even tiny bumps in the bark give them something to push against. Climbing keeps them up high, away from many ground animals.

Light and Slim

Step one: light and slim. Tree snakes are long and thin, so they are light for their size. A light body is much easier to hold up on a branch or trunk.

Grippy Scales

Step two: grippy scales. Snakes have wide scales on their bellies that catch even tiny bumps in the bark. Rough bark is easy for those scales to grab.

Bend and Push

Step three: bend and push. The snake bends its body into curves and pushes against rough spots on the trunk. Some also wrap their tails around branches for an extra hold.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A light body is easier to carry upward. Belly scales catch tiny bumps. Curves push against the bark. And a wrapped tail adds grip. Everything works together.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some tree snakes can stretch out half their body between branches. That helps them cross gaps without going down. They hunt and rest in the trees, away from many ground animals. Stay far away from any wild snake, and tell a grown-up if you see one.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Slowly pull a piece of rope up a rough wooden board. Then pull it up a smooth tile. Which surface lets the rope grip? Rough bark is easy for snake scales to catch!
