Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do weaver ants build nests from living leaves?

The Big Idea

Weaver ants build their nests by pulling living leaves together and stitching them with silk! Hundreds of workers team up for the job. The leaves stay on the tree, so the nest stays green and hidden.

Pull Together

Step one: pull together. Workers line up and hold the edges of leaves with their legs. Some form chains, with each ant gripping the one before it, to pull leaves close together.

Silk Glue

Step two: silk glue. Other workers carry their larvae, which are baby ants that make sticky silk. The workers use each larva like a tiny glue tube to stitch the leaves together.

A Big Home

Step three: a big home. One colony can have many nests across several trees. The ants fiercely guard their territory, so we always watch from far away.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Worker ants do the pulling. They bend living leaves together. Silk from larvae stitches them shut. The finished nest is a cozy leaf home. It is teamwork at its best, with every ant doing a job!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A weaver ant colony can have hundreds of thousands of workers. The ants live high in the trees, in bright green nests. They defend their trees from many leaf-eating insects, which is a big help to the tree. Never touch ants or their nests. Watch from far away.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Fold two leaves or paper strips together and join them with tape. Now imagine doing it with ants holding the edges. What part would be the hardest? Share your ideas with a grown-up!
