Why Do Howler Monkeys Howl So Loudly?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do howler monkeys howl so loudly?

The Big Idea

Howler monkeys howl so loudly because their bodies have a built-in loudspeaker! A special enlarged throat bone works like an echo chamber. It makes their calls super loud, so they carry across the forest.

Echo Chamber

Step one: an echo chamber. Howlers have an enlarged throat bone called the hyoid. It makes a hollow space that boosts the sound, like the body of a guitar. The monkey's voice booms out of its throat.

Far Away

Step two: heard from far away. A howler's roar can be heard up to 3 miles, or about 5 kilometers, away. That is louder and farther than almost any other land animal.

Stay Apart

Step three: stay apart. Troops howl to say, this is our patch of forest. Then groups can avoid fights without ever meeting. They usually howl at dawn and dusk.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! This is a howler monkey. Its big throat bone boosts the sound. The roar travels for miles. Troops call most at dawn and dusk, when the forest is quiet and the sound travels far. It is a message across the trees. The roar is a friendly way to keep the peace.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Howler monkeys are among the loudest land animals. Their calls help different troops keep their distance. Howlers mostly eat leaves and fruit, and they rest a lot. Watch wild monkeys from far away and never touch them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Cup your hands around your mouth like a megaphone. Hum a long note. How does the sound change? Howlers have a built-in sound booster!
