Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are there so many insects in rainforests?

The Big Idea

Warm, wet weather all year means insects never have to sleep through a winter. There are plenty of leaves, flowers, wood, and fruit to eat, plus countless hiding places. That is why rainforests are packed with insects!

No Winter

Step one: no winter. In cold places, insects must hide or sleep for months. In the rainforest, they can grow and breed all year, so there are always new ones hatching.

So Much Food

Step two: so much food. Different insects have specialized in different foods, even single kinds of plants. That leaves room for many kinds of insects.

Hiding Places

Step three: hiding places. Bark, leaves, flowers, and logs make countless safe spots. Scientists think millions of rainforest insects still have no names.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Ants march along branches and leaves. Butterflies sip nectar from flowers. Beetles munch on wood and leaves, and recycle them. And crickets fill the night with song.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A single tree in Peru was found to hold 43 species of ants. Millions of rainforest insects still have no names. Insects are food for birds, frogs, and bats. Look, but never touch wild insects.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look at the ground, plants, and bark in a yard or park. Count how many different kinds of small animals you can see. Look, but do not touch or move them. Keep a tally, then wave goodbye and leave them in peace.

Outro

Warm weather, lots of food, and many hiding places fill the rainforest with insects. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
