Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are so many rainforest trees tall and skinny with no branches near the ground?

The Big Idea

Rainforest trees race one another for sunlight. A tall trunk with no low branches grows fast toward the light. It saves energy by not growing leaves where it is dark, and spreads its branches only at the top.

The Light Race

Step one: a race to the top. Thousands of trees compete for sunshine, and the tallest ones win the brightest light. Some trees grow more than 3 feet in a single year!

No Low Branches

Step two: skip the low branches. Leaves in the dark can't make much food, so the tree doesn't grow them there. All its energy goes into growing up, up, up!

Strong Roots

Step three: standing tall. Many rainforest trees have wide, flaring roots that spread across the shallow soil. They work like the legs of a tripod, keeping the tree steady.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The leaves and branches spread out at the very top. The trunk below is straight and bare. Wide roots hold the tree steady. All of that helps the tree reach the bright light.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some trees grow more than 3 feet in a single year. Low branches would only shade themselves and waste energy. Flaring roots help tall trees stand in shallow soil. Do this with a grown-up and a small potted plant.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Place a small plant on a sunny windowsill. Watch it lean toward the light for a week. Plants reach for the Sun. In a rainforest, they stretch a long way.
