Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some lizards lift their feet one at a time on hot sand?
The Big Idea
The shovel-snouted lizard of the Namib Desert does a little dance when the sand is too hot! It raises two feet off the ground while resting on the other two, then switches. Each foot gets a break to cool down in the air.
Scorching Sand
Step one: scorching sand. In the Namib Desert, the sand can get so hot that it is painful to stand on. A lizard has no shoes, so it must use clever moves.
The Foot Dance
Step two: the foot dance. The lizard lifts two feet off the sand while it rests on the other two, then switches. This way, each foot spends part of the time cooling in the air.
Tail Help
Step three: extra tricks. Sometimes it also leans up on its tail to keep more of its body off the ground. It may even dive into loose sand to escape the heat.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The sand is scorching. The lizard lifts two feet. Then it switches to the other two. Each foot cools in the air. It looks like a tiny dance.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some lizards also dive into loose sand to escape the heat. Others stand on their tiptoes with a lifted belly. The shovel-snouted lizard has a flat nose for sliding into sand. Admire desert lizards from far away, and never walk barefoot on hot sand.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Stand on a cool floor in socks. Lift one foot, then the other, like the lizard. Make up a dance that gives each foot a short break. Can you do it without falling?
