Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a beetle collect drinking water from fog?

The Big Idea

In the Namib Desert, fog rolls in from the ocean at dawn, and some beetles use it to drink! Fog droplets gather on the beetle's bumpy back. The tiny drops join together and roll down toward its mouth.

Fog Rolls In

Step one: fog rolls in. In the Namib Desert, the cold ocean sends fog into the dunes at dawn. Cool, wet fog drifts over the dunes, bringing a rare drink of water.

Beetle Head Down

Step two: the beetle climbs a dune. A darkling beetle points its body into the wind and tilts its back up. Fog droplets gather on its bumpy back.

Drops Roll Down

Step three: the drops roll. The tiny drops join into bigger drops and roll down toward the beetle's mouth. Scientists study this trick to design water-collecting materials.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Fog drifts over the dunes. The beetle's back is covered in bumps. Drops join and roll to its mouth. Engineers copy the idea for water-catching nets. Nature gives us clever designs.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Engineers study the beetle's bumpy back to design water-catching nets. People in foggy dry places use nets to collect drinking water. The Namib is one of the oldest deserts in the world. Never taste unknown water, and ask a grown-up before any experiment.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up present, hang a clean, dry cloth in a steamy bathroom. Watch tiny droplets form on it. Droplets gathering on a surface is the beetle's trick at work. Keep away from hot water.

A beetle drinks from fog, and people copy that trick. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
