How Can a Kangaroo Rat Live Without Ever Taking a Drink?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a kangaroo rat live without ever taking a drink?

The Big Idea

A kangaroo rat lives its whole life without taking a drink! It eats dry seeds, and its body makes a little water while digesting them. Its kidneys are also extremely good at saving water.

Seeds Make Water

Step one: seeds make water. A kangaroo rat eats dry seeds. When its body digests them, it makes a little water.

Super Savers

Step two: super savers. Its kidneys save almost every drop of water, much better than ours do. So its body wastes are very dry and concentrated.

Cool, Damp Burrow

Step three: a humid burrow. By day it rests in a cool, humid burrow, which saves water. It even breathes in a way that saves moisture.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! It eats dry seeds. Its kidneys save water. It hides in a cool burrow by day. And its strong back legs let it hop. It really can hop like a tiny kangaroo, and that is how it got its name!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A kangaroo rat can hop like a tiny kangaroo. Its long back legs help it leap away from danger. It comes out at night, when the desert is cooler, to gather seeds in its cheek pouches. Watch kangaroo rats from a distance, and never pick up wild animals.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Dampen two paper towels. Put one in a closed zip bag and leave one out in the open. Check both tomorrow. A closed burrow keeps moisture in the same way the bag does.
