Why Can a Drone Hover but an Airplane Can't?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can a drone hover but an airplane can't?

The Big Idea

A drone can hover because its propellers are tiny spinning wings, but an airplane's wings must keep moving forward! Wings make lift only when air flows past them. A drone's spinning blades make air flow even when the drone stays still.

Wings Need Air

Step one: wings need moving air. An airplane wing makes lift only when it moves forward through the air. So a plane must keep moving, or it would fall.

Spinning Wings

Step two: spinning wings. A drone's propellers are tiny wings that spin in a circle. They move through the air even when the drone stays in one place.

Push Down, Stay Up

Step three: push down and stay up. The blades push air down to hold the drone up. Helicopters work the same way, so they can hover too.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A plane wing is fixed and must fly forward. A drone blade spins around and around. Both need air moving past them. The spinning blades let a drone hover in place.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Spinning wings can hover, but fixed wings cannot. Helicopters, quadcopters, and some toys all hover the same way. Some drones have fixed wings and fly like planes to go farther. Paper planes and paper strips are safe ways to test lift.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hold a paper strip just below your lower lip, and blow across the top. The strip lifts up! Now make a paper airplane and watch it glide forward. What does the plane need that a drone does not?
