Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do scientists use drones to study tall trees and forest canopies?

The Big Idea

Scientists use small drones to study tall trees because drones can fly right up to the treetops! Tree canopies are full of leaves, branches, and animals, high above the ground. They are very hard to study from below.

Hard to Reach

Step one: hard to reach. The tops of tall trees are far above the ground and hard to see from below. Scientists used to climb the trees or use cranes.

Drones Fly Up

Step two: drones fly up. Now small drones can fly close to the treetops and take photos. They can also measure the color of the leaves.

Gentle Studies

Step three: study gently. Some drones can even gather a small leaf sample. The trees are not harmed, and scientists learn about their health.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Tall trees reach high into the sky. A drone can rise up beside them. It checks leaf colors to see how healthy the trees are. It can also spot nests and animals living high up.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some trees grow taller than a 20-story building. Rainforests in British Columbia have some of Canada's tallest trees. Many animals live only in the treetops, and drones help us find them without disturbing them. Look at tall trees from a safe distance, with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look up at a tall tree with a grown-up. List three things in the top that you cannot see well from the ground. How could a drone help you see them? Draw what you think it would find!

Outro

Drones help scientists see high treetops without climbing. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
