Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do pool-cleaning robots clean underwater?

The Big Idea

A pool robot cleans by pulling water through a filter bag as it drives! It scrubs with brushes and its filter catches the dirt. It follows a pattern across the floor and the walls.

Drive and Scrub

Step one: drive and scrub. A motor turns wheels or tracks to move the robot along the pool, while brushes scrub the surface. It follows a pattern across the floor and up the walls.

Pull Water In

Step two: filter the water. Another motor pulls water through a filter bag. The filter catches leaves and dirt, and the clean water goes back into the pool.

Sense the Wall

Step three: sense and turn. Sensors tell the robot when it hits a wall, so it can turn around. It keeps going until the timer ends, and a safe, low-voltage cable powers it.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Brushes loosen the dirt on the pool floor. The pump pulls the dirty water in. The filter bag traps the dirt, and lets the water through. The wall sensor tells it when to turn. The pool gets clean, and nobody has to scrub it by hand.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Pool robots can climb the walls. Some have a timer that sets how long they clean. Never swim while a pool robot is working. Ask a grown-up to handle the pool robot and its cable.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Mix a spoonful of soil in a jar of water. Pour it through a coffee filter into another jar. What got caught? That is how a pool robot's filter bag gets dirt out of the water.
