Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a robot balance on just two wheels?

The Big Idea

A two-wheeled robot balances like a broom on your hand! When it starts to tip, its wheels roll under it to catch it. It looks calm, but it is always catching itself.

Sense the Tilt

Step one: sense the tilt. A balancing robot has sensors that notice the instant it starts to lean. These sensors can measure leans that are too small for you to see.

Wheels Chase

Step two: chase the tilt. If the robot tips forward, the wheels roll forward to get back under its body. If it tips back, the wheels roll backward.

Hundreds of Fixes

Step three: do it again. The tiny corrections happen about a hundred times every second. That is why the robot stays upright and looks so calm.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The tilt sensor feels every lean. The brain decides how fast to roll. The wheel motors move under the body. The robot stays standing, as if by magic. It is really a lot of tiny, quick catches, one after another.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some scooters and hoverboards balance this way too. The idea is called an inverted pendulum. A taller robot is easier to balance, because it tips more slowly. Always wear a helmet if you ever ride a balancing scooter.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Balance a long ruler or a broom handle upright on your palm. Move your hand to keep it from falling. Which way do you move your hand when it leans? That is what the wheels do!
