Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some robots wriggle like snakes?
The Big Idea
Snake robots wriggle because they bend in a wave that travels down their body! The wave pushes against the ground or walls and moves them forward. Their long, thin bodies fit where wheels and legs cannot.
Many Sections
Step one: build a chain. A snake robot is made of many small sections joined in a line. Each joint has a little motor.
Make a Wave
Step two: send a wave. The motors bend the body into an S-shape that travels down it, like a ripple on a rope. The bends push against the ground, and the robot moves forward.
Squeeze In
Step three: reach tight spots. Long, thin bodies can squeeze into pipes, cracks, and narrow gaps. They can go where wheels and legs cannot.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Small parts are linked in a line. A wave of bending moves from head to tail. Each bend pushes sideways against the ground or walls. Together the pushes slide the robot forward. The thin body slips into places people can't reach.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Real snakes move in a wave too. Snake robots can help look inside pipes or rubble. Some can even swim, or climb poles. Handle toy snakes gently, and keep them away from pets.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make a snake from a chain of linked paper clips, or a paper-strip chain. Move it by making an S-shaped wave along it. Which way does it move compared with the wave? Try again on a rough surface.
Outro
A wave of bending lets a snake robot wriggle into tight places. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
