Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why was the first factory robot just an arm?
The Big Idea
The first factory robot was just an arm because an arm could do a useful job right away! It was called Unimate, and it started work in 1961. It lifted hot, heavy metal parts, which was risky for people.
A Risky Job
Step one: a risky job. In a car factory, workers had to lift hot, heavy metal parts, which could burn or hurt them. That was exactly the kind of job a machine could take over.
Simple Body
Step two: a simple body. An arm can reach, turn, and carry things from one place to another. That is much simpler to build than a whole walking robot.
Arms Today
Step three: arms today. Factory arms now weld, paint, lift, and pack all kinds of things. Engineers started with a simple robot and improved it step by step.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The base of the arm turns. The arm reaches out to a part. The gripper grabs it. Then the arm places it in a new spot, again and again.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Unimate worked at a General Motors factory in New Jersey. Its job was lifting hot die-cast metal parts. Arms are good because they can reach, turn, and carry. Use light things when you test your own arm.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, try an experiment! Use your own arm to pick up five different things, like a pencil, a book, and a cup. Count what your arm does each time: reach, grip, lift, turn, and put down. A robot arm does the same steps! Which object was trickiest?
