Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why isn't a laptop a robot?
The Big Idea
A laptop is not a robot because it cannot move around or change the physical world on its own! It can sense keys and show results on a screen. But a robot has a body that moves parts in the real world.
What It Does
Step one: what a laptop does. It senses the keys you press and the touchpad you touch. Then its computer follows a program and shows the results on a screen.
What Is Missing
Step two: what is missing. A laptop cannot roll across a room or pick up a cup. It does not have motors, wheels, or arms that change the real world.
Add a Body
Step three: add a body. A laptop with wheels, arms, and sensors could become part of a robot. In fact, small computers run the brains of almost every robot.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Keys are a kind of sensor. A screen is a way to show answers. Wheels would let it move. And arms would let it act on the world. Those are the parts it needs.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Computers are inside almost every robot, but not every computer is a robot. Phones, tablets, and game consoles are computers too. A robot brain is often a small, tough computer. Do not take apart any computer, since it holds a battery and tiny parts.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, your mission! Draw a laptop on paper. Add the parts it would need to become a robot. Which parts would let it sense? Which would let it act? What would you add first?
