How Does a Hearing Aid Work?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a hearing aid work?

The Big Idea

A hearing aid is a tiny device worn in or behind the ear that makes sounds easier to hear! It has a microphone, a small computer, and a tiny speaker. Many people of all ages use them to help them hear.

Microphone

Step one: the microphone. A tiny microphone collects sound from around the person. It turns the sound into an electrical signal.

Computer

Step two: the computer. A small computer makes the sounds that the person needs to hear louder. Modern hearing aids can even focus on voices and reduce background noise.

Speaker

Step three: the speaker. A tiny speaker plays the sounds into the ear, so the person hears them more clearly. A specialist fits each hearing aid so it suits each person.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The microphone collects sound from all around. The computer adjusts it. The tiny speaker plays it. And the ear hears the result. It is a team of small parts.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Quick facts about hearing aids. They are fitted by a specialist. Some can pair with phones. Hearing aids make sounds clearer, not perfect. Wearing one is nothing to be shy about.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw the path of sound through a hearing aid: microphone, computer, speaker, ear. Which part does the job that your outer ear does? Which part does the job of a volume knob? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
