Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can scientists use sound to measure how thick ice is?
The Big Idea
Scientists can measure how thick ice is by sending sound into it and timing the echo! A short pulse of sound goes down and bounces off the bottom of the ice. The longer the echo takes, the thicker the ice.
Send A Pulse
Step one: send a pulse. Scientists send a short pulse of sound into the ice. It travels down through the ice.
Bounce Back
Step two: bounce back. When the pulse reaches the water below, some of it bounces back up. A sensor listens for that echo.
Time Tells Thickness
Step three: time tells thickness. Sound moves about 3,500 meters each second in ice, which is much faster than in air. Time the echo, divide by 2, and you know how thick the ice is.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! First, the sound pulse is sent out. It travels down through the ice. It bounces off the water below. The scientists time the round trip. Never test ice yourself.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Quick facts about ice. Ice roads in the north need careful thickness checks. Sound travels faster in ice than in air. Radar from the air can measure ice too. Always stay off ice unless adults know it is safe.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Do this on paper only, never on real ice. A pulse goes down and returns after 0.0004 seconds. Sound in ice goes about 3,500 meters each second. How thick is the ice? Remember to divide by 2. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
