Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do plumbers find a leak in a pipe using sound?

The Big Idea

Plumbers can find a leak in a pipe by listening for the sound the leak makes! Water under pressure squirts through a tiny crack with a hissing noise. That noise travels along the pipe, and special tools can hear it.

A Hissing Leak

Step one: a hissing leak. Water inside a pipe is pushed hard, which is called pressure. When it squirts through a tiny crack, it makes a hissing noise.

Sound Travels

Step two: sound travels. The hiss makes the pipe and the water shake, and those vibrations travel a long way. Metal and water carry sound very well.

Find The Loudest

Step three: find the loudest spot. Plumbers use listening tools with microphones and move along the pipe. The spot where the sound is strongest is the leak, and it saves them from digging up whole streets.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, water squirts out of a crack. The squirt makes a hissing sound. A microphone listens along the pipe. The loudest spot shows the leak. That saves lots of digging.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Quick facts about leak finding. Leaks waste huge amounts of clean water. Doctors listen to your heart with a similar tool. Sound can travel far in metal pipes. Ask a grown-up to help.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, run some water in a sink and hold a cup against the wall near the pipe. Press your ear to the bottom of the cup. Is it louder than without the cup? Move around to find the loudest spot. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
