How Can You Use an Echo to Measure Distance?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can you use an echo to measure distance?

The Big Idea

An echo is a sound's round trip, and you can use its trip time to measure distance! The sound goes to a wall and comes back, so it travels there and back. Time it, and a little math tells you how far away the wall is.

Know The Speed

Step one: know the speed. In air, sound travels about 343 meters every second. That is the key number.

Time The Echo

Step two: time the echo. Clap and measure the time until you hear it come back. Say the echo takes 1 second.

Halve It

Step three: halve it. Multiply 343 by the time, then divide by 2, because the sound went there and back. A 1-second echo means the wall is about 170 meters away.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, make a sound toward a faraway wall. Next, time how long the echo takes. Then multiply the time by 343. Last, divide by 2 to get the distance. Ships, bats, and dolphins use this trick.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Quick facts about echo ranging. Ships use sonar to measure how deep the sea is. Bats time their squeaks to catch insects. Dolphins find fish with clicks and echoes. Nature invented echo math first.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Work this out: you clap, and the echo returns after 2 seconds. How far away is the cliff? Multiply 343 by 2, then divide by 2 again. It is 343 meters! Now try an echo of half a second. What do you get? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
