Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a shout in a tunnel keep ringing?
The Big Idea
A sound in a tunnel keeps ringing because the walls, floor, and ceiling are all hard! The sound bounces back and forth along the whole tunnel. Each bounce loses a little energy, so the sound fades slowly.
Hard Walls
Step one: hard walls. Concrete and stone do not soak up much sound. They reflect most of it, so the sound keeps going instead of fading away quickly.
Long Tube
Step two: a long tube. A tunnel is long and narrow, so a sound can bounce off the walls many, many times. Each bounce keeps the sound alive a little longer.
Slow Fade
Step three: a slow fade. Every bounce loses a little energy, so the sound gets quieter and quieter. In a long tunnel it can take several seconds to die away.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! First, a sound starts in the tunnel. The hard walls, floor, and ceiling reflect it. It bounces many times along the way. Each bounce makes it a little quieter, until it fades. That lingering sound is called reverb.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Quick facts about reverb. Big stone buildings have long reverb too. Carpet, curtains, and cushions shorten reverb. Scientists time reverb by how long a sound takes to fade. Be gentle with your voice in echoey places.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, clap once in a stairwell, a gym, or an underpass and count the seconds the sound lingers. Then clap once in a carpeted room. Which place lasts longer? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
