Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can you hear a clear echo in a canyon but not in a forest?
The Big Idea
An echo is a sound that bounces off a hard surface and comes back to you! In a canyon, tall flat rock walls send your voice straight back. In a forest, trees and leaves scatter and soak up the sound, so hardly any returns.
Sound Bounces
Step one: sound bounces. Sound travels in waves. When waves hit something big and hard, they bounce back, like a ball off a wall. Smooth rock is great at it.
Wait For It
Step two: the gap. Your ears need about a tenth of a second between your voice and the echo to hear two separate sounds. A far canyon wall gives you that gap.
Forests Scatter
Step three: forests scatter. Trunks, branches, and leaves are bumpy and soft. They send sound in many directions and soak some up. Only a faint jumble returns.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! First, your voice travels out as a sound wave. Next, it hits a big, flat wall. Then the wall bounces it back. Last, your ears hear it a moment later. Hard and flat makes clear echoes.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Quick facts about echoes. Sound travels about 343 meters each second in air. Echoes come back clearest from flat, hard surfaces. Soft things like leaves, curtains, and snow soak up sound. Try it with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a big flat wall across an empty field, at least 20 big steps away. Say a short word in your normal clear voice. Never scream. Try the same near some trees and compare what you hear! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
