Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do voices sound thin high up on a mountain?
The Big Idea
Voices can sound thin high on a mountain because thin air and open spaces make sound fade fast! Up high, the air has fewer particles in each puff. There are also few walls to bounce sound back.
Thinner Air
Step one: thinner air. The higher you climb, the thinner the air gets, with fewer particles in each puff. Sound needs particles to pass the push along.
Fades Faster
Step two: sound fades. With less stuff to pass on the push, sounds are a bit quieter and fade faster. The air is colder on a mountain too, which slows sound slightly.
Wide Open Spaces
Step three: wide open space. Mountain valleys can be wide open, so there are few walls to bounce sound back to you. A shout can seem small in a huge space.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! You are high up on the mountain. The air is thin, with fewer particles. It is colder too, which slows sound slightly. And in the open space, nothing bounces sound back.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A small closed room helps voices sound full and loud. That is because the walls bounce the sound back to you. Outdoors, most of that bounce-back is missing. Keep voices gentle outdoors, and respect wildlife and other hikers.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a detective! Compare talking in a small closed room with talking in a big open field. Use a normal voice both times. Where does your voice seem fuller and louder? What is bouncing back in the room that is missing outdoors?
