Why Does a Crowd of People Sound Like a Steady Roar?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a crowd of people sound like a steady roar?

The Big Idea

A crowd sounds like a steady roar because many voices blend into one smooth noise! The voices are at different pitches and at different times. So no single voice stands out.

Many Voices

Step one: many voices. A crowd is made of lots of voices, each with its own pitch. No two voices match. They are all talking at different times, too.

Waves Overlap

Step two: waves overlap. The sound waves all arrive at your ear at once and mix in a jumbled way. So no single voice stands out from the rest. It is like mixing every color of paint into one.

A Smooth Roar

Step three: a steady roar. When many random sounds are added together, they blend into a smooth roar. Your ear hears a steady noise, much like a waterfall.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! One voice is easy to follow. Many voices all at once overlap. Their waves mix in a jumble. And together they sound like a steady roar.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Rain on a roof works the same way. Each drop is a tiny tap, and thousands blend together. Ocean waves and wind in leaves also make steady noise. Big crowds can be loud, so ear protection helps at big events.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, give it a go! With four or five friends, everyone say a different word at the same time, in a normal voice. Can you make out any single word? Then everyone say the same word together. What changes?

Outro

Many random sounds blend into a steady roar, just like rain on a roof. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
