Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a slinky show how a sound wave moves?

The Big Idea

A slinky is like a long row of air particles joined by springs! Push a few coils together, and the squeeze travels along it just like a sound wave. That makes it a perfect model for seeing sound.

Coils Are Particles

Step one: coils act like air particles. In air, tiny particles bump their neighbors. In a slinky, each coil is joined to the next by springy metal.

Push Some Coils

Step two: push some coils together. That squeezed bunch is like a compression in a sound wave. When you let go, the bunch springs outward and pushes the next coils.

The Squeeze Travels

Step three: the squeeze travels. Each coil only jiggles back and forth, but the squeeze runs all the way down the slinky. When it hits the end, it bounces back, just like an echo.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The coils are our pretend air particles. A few coils get squeezed together. The squeezed part zooms toward the other end. Then it bounces back.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sound waves are push waves, and a slinky shows them well. The coils move a little, but the wave travels far. Sound bounces off walls too, and that bounce is an echo. Ask a grown-up to help, and keep the slinky from snapping back.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, explorer task! Stretch a slinky along a smooth floor or table with a friend holding the other end. Push a few coils together and let go. Watch the squeezed part zoom to the end and bounce back! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
