Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a sound wave actually made of?

The Big Idea

A sound wave is made of squeezed and stretched air! Where the air is squeezed, tiny particles bunch together, and where it is stretched, they spread apart. That pattern travels outward, even though the air mostly stays in the same place.

Squeeze

Step one: squeeze. A vibrating object, like a bell, pushes air particles together right next to it. The squeezed spots are called compressions.

Stretch

Step two: stretch. When the object moves back, the particles are left spread out. The spread-out spots are called rarefactions, which is rare-uh-FAK-shuns.

The Pattern Travels

Step three: the pattern travels. Squeeze, stretch, squeeze, stretch moves away from the source, like a chain of tiny pushes. Each particle just jiggles a little while the wave carries energy to your ear.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Squeezed air has particles packed close together. Stretched air has particles spread far apart. The pattern moves outward at the speed of sound. Finally it reaches your ear, and your eardrum feels the pattern.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Squeezed spots are called compressions. Stretched spots are called rarefactions. Air particles jiggle in place while the wave moves on. Sound is energy, and your ears are precious, so keep the volume comfortable for your ears.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, give it a go! Stand ten dominoes in a row, close together, and tip over the first one. Watch the push run along the row. Which parts moved, and which part just kept going? Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

A sound wave is squeezes and stretches traveling through air. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
