Why Do Bike Reflectors Shine When a Car's Headlights Hit Them?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do bike reflectors shine when a car's headlights hit them?

The Big Idea

A bike reflector shines because it sends headlight beams straight back to the driver! It is covered in tiny three-sided mirror corners. That makes you easy to spot in the dark.

Corner Cubes

Step one: corner cubes. A bike reflector is covered in tiny, three-sided mirror corners. They are called corner cubes, and they look a bit like the inside corner of a box.

Straight Back

Step two: bounce back. Each corner cube bounces light straight back toward where it came from, even if the light arrives at an angle. A normal flat mirror would send it off to the side.

Seen at Night

Step three: seen at night. When a car's headlights hit your reflector, the light returns to the driver's eyes. The reflector glows, so the driver spots you.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Headlights shine toward the bike. Corner cubes catch the light. They send it straight back. And the driver sees your bike.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many road signs use the same trick, which is why they shine so brightly in headlights. A reflector has no battery and no bulb. It only works when another light shines on it. Reflectors on wheels and pedals help too.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! At dusk, with a grown-up in a safe yard, shine a flashlight at a bike reflector from different angles. Stand right next to the flashlight. Does the reflector glow back toward you each time? Never point the flashlight at anyone's eyes.
