How Can a Small Mirror Flash a Signal Across a Valley?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a small mirror flash a signal across a valley?

The Big Idea

A small mirror can flash a signal across a valley because it can send light a long way! Tilt the mirror, and the bright spot jumps around. Hikers have used this to signal for help.

Catch Light

Step one: catch the light. A small mirror bounces light in a new direction. Outdoors, the Sun gives it plenty of bright light to send.

Narrow Beam

Step two: a long way. A mirror's light stays a fairly narrow beam, so it can be seen across a valley. A mirror signal can be spotted from many kilometers away.

Tiny Tilt

Step three: aiming. A tiny movement of the mirror makes the far-away spot jump a long distance. Rescuers can see the flashes, and know someone needs help.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Light shines on the mirror. The mirror bounces it toward a far-away spot. A tiny tilt moves that spot a lot. Flashes can become a signal for help.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Signal mirrors are in many survival kits. Old mountain and army posts used mirror flashers called heliographs. A mirror flash can be seen from many kilometers away. Never flash a mirror at people, cars, or windows.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up in a dim room, bounce a flashlight off a small mirror onto a far wall. Try to hit a target on the wall. Notice how a tiny tilt makes the spot jump. Never use sunlight, and never flash it at people, cars, or windows.
