Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a flashlight have a shiny cup behind the bulb?

The Big Idea

A flashlight has a shiny cup behind the bulb to catch light that goes backward! The curved cup bounces it forward. So the beam is brighter and stronger.

Light Everywhere

Step one: light everywhere. A bare bulb sends light in every direction, even backward. Backward light would not help you see where you are going, so it would be wasted.

Shiny Cup

Step two: the shiny cup behind the bulb. The curved, shiny cup behind the bulb catches the backward light. Then it bounces the light forward.

Strong Beam

Step three: a stronger beam. All that extra light joins the beam heading forward, so the beam is stronger. Without the mirror, light would scatter and waste energy.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The bulb sends light everywhere. The shiny cup catches the backward light. It bounces that light forward. And the beam gets brighter.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Car headlights use a curved reflector the same way. Lighthouses once used big curved mirrors too, to send their light far out to sea. A smooth, shiny surface makes the best reflector, and a curved shape aims it. Dull, rough surfaces scatter the light in all directions instead.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Cup a piece of foil behind a small LED keychain light. Shine it at the wall in a dim room, and watch the beam. Move the foil closer and farther from the light. How does the beam change? Never shine it at anyone's eyes.

A shiny cup bounces backward light forward to make a brighter beam. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
