Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a flashlight beam get wider the farther it goes?
The Big Idea
A flashlight beam gets wider the farther it goes because light spreads out! The same light covers a bigger and bigger circle. So the beam gets weaker too.
Spreading Out
Step one: spreading out. Light leaves a flashlight in a cone shape. The farther it goes, the bigger the circle it lights up, like a cone that keeps growing.
Same Light
Step two: the same light. A flashlight gives off the same amount of light, no matter how far away the wall is. A bigger circle means each spot gets less light, so far away it looks dim.
Narrow Beam
Step three: narrower beams. A narrow-beam flashlight has a lens that squeezes the light into a tighter cone. It still spreads, just more slowly.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The light starts at the flashlight. It spreads into a cone. The circle on the wall grows. And the light gets weaker in every spot.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Far away, a flashlight beam is both at its widest and at its weakest. Spotlights on stages use lenses and mirrors to keep their beams narrow. Lighthouses use big lenses to send their beams far. Move the flashlight closer, and the circle shrinks and gets brighter.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Shine a flashlight at a wall from one step away, then three steps, then six. Trace each circle with chalk on paper, or stick small notes at the edges. How does the size change? Never shine the flashlight at anyone's eyes.
Outro
A flashlight beam spreads out, so it gets wider and dimmer as it goes. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
