Why Do Some Windows Have a Thin, Shiny Coating?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some windows have a thin, shiny coating?

The Big Idea

Some windows have a coating that is thinner than a hair. It lets visible light pass through but reflects heat rays. In winter, it keeps heat in the room, and in summer, it keeps the Sun's heat out.

Thin Coating

Step one: a thin coating. A special layer of metal or other materials is put on the glass. It is so thin that it is almost invisible, and you can look right through it.

Light Passes

Step two: light passes. Visible light still gets through, so you can see outside. But invisible heat rays, called infrared, bounce back.

Warmer or Cooler

Step three: warmer or cooler. In winter, the coating reflects the room's heat back inside. In summer, it helps keep the Sun's heat out, so the room stays cooler.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Look at a window with two panes of glass, with air between. Shine a small flashlight at an angle in a dim room. You can see several faint reflections. Do any look slightly colored?

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Double-pane windows with coatings can save energy. They also make rooms quieter and more comfortable, because two panes block more sound. Infrared heat rays are invisible to our eyes. Never shine a light into anyone's eyes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, shine a small flashlight at an angle on a double-pane window in a dim room. Look for several faint reflections. Do any look slightly colored? Never shine the light at anyone's eyes.
