Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are some plastics clear and others cloudy?

The Big Idea

Clear plastics have molecules arranged so that light can pass through without much scattering. Cloudy plastics have tiny crystals or added particles that bounce light around. Soda bottles are clear, while milk jugs are cloudy.

Clear Plastic

Step one: clear plastic. In clear plastic, the molecules are arranged in a way that does not scatter much light. So light goes straight through, and you can see clearly, like in a soda bottle.

Cloudy Plastic

Step two: cloudy plastic. Some plastics contain tiny crystals or added particles, such as white coloring. They bounce light in many directions, so you see a milky look.

Why Both?

Step three: why both? Makers choose clear plastic when you need to see inside. They choose cloudy plastic when it is strong, cheap, or helps protect the contents from light.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A soda bottle is clear. A milk jug is cloudy. A shampoo bottle might be in between, a little cloudy but still see-through. Hold each one up to a window to compare them side by side.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Plastic recycling codes help sort clear and cloudy plastics. Clear bottles and cloudy jugs usually get recycled separately. Some cloudy plastics keep milk safe from light. Wash containers before you handle them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Collect different plastic containers from the recycling bin, washed. Hold each one up to a window. Sort them into clear, a little cloudy, and very cloudy. What do the cloudy ones have in common?

Outro

Clear plastic passes light, and cloudy plastic scatters it. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
